The agreement, on page 109, says HCA will build a 120-bed “inpatient behavioral health hospital in Asheville” within five years of obtaining permits. What is the need for the project and what type of care would it provide? (Many people use the terms “behavioral health” and “mental health” interchangeably. I’m asking about services simply to ensure you folks don’t have something different in mind.) How would this compare, in terms of size at least, with services available in Asheville now? Any further details you can provide on timing, location and the rationale behind the project would also be helpful.

The services will parallel our current services – inpatient behavioral health care for adults and children, but in a significantly expanded facility to accommodate the dramatic increase in need for this population.  This is a huge win for our region, where patients often are forced to board in Emergency Departments for days or weeks.  As you know, we are in the midst of an unprecedented behavioral health crisis and this new facility, while not curative, will provide some welcome relief.
