Moving Forward

On March 21, Mission Health’s Board of Directors announced that it has entered into a letter of intent (LOI) to explore the possibility of joining HCA Healthcare, a Nashville, Tennessee-based company, and how the two could come together to preserve and grow Mission Health’s ability to deliver world-class care to the people of western North Carolina for generations to come.

The right choice for our people, patients and community.

HCA Healthcare is a best-in-class healthcare provider that offers benefits on a scale that would be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve otherwise. As important, the newly formed foundation will be life-changing for the residents of our region, providing tens of millions of dollars annually in new support for the most vulnerable.
– John R. Ball, MD, Mission Health Board Chair, March 21, 2018
As a healthcare provider founded by physicians 50 years ago, we appreciate the way Mission Health has served western North Carolina with a level of excellence that has earned national recognition as one of the top 15 healthcare systems in the country. We appreciate the opportunity to discuss becoming an integral part of their community.

It’s important that our choice share our mission, values and ethics. Founded 50 years ago by two physicians, HCA Healthcare has been committed to always putting patients first – and has a proven track-record of investing meaningfully in its communities – not just for its healthcare operations, but beyond.

A key component of this agreement, should it move forward, is the creation of a very significant foundation. It is intended that the foundation’s assets will be administered by people who live in our communities for the people who live in our communities. With the potential of tens of millions of dollars available every year to improve the health of the residents of western North Carolina, the possibilities of this new foundation are nothing short of transformational.

What’s an LOI?

Learn about the steps we’ll be taking over the next several months.

We are excited to be considering joining HCA Healthcare and benefitting from its caliber and exceptional capabilities in research, clinical trials, data analytics, graduate medical education and more. In return, joining HCA Healthcare would allow Mission Health to share our quality and clinical outcome best practices with the broader HCA Healthcare family to the benefit of communities across the nation.
– Ronald A. Paulus, MD, Mission Health President and CEO

Mission Health thanks our team members, clinicians and volunteers for everything you do every day on behalf of our patients and communities. You are the reason Mission Health is such a strong organization.

Over the next several months, Mission Health and HCA Healthcare will continue conversations with the goal of reaching a definitive agreement by the end of the year. We will post updates to this website so check back often.
